English Language Challenges

This one last time I’d like to talk about my English language challenges after this class. First of all I have to say that I really like to learn other languages like English because I think it’s interesting to know how other people express themselves all over the world. So I have to say that I like to have the opportunity to learn and practice a language different from Spanish. Regarding to our blogs I have to say that even when there were sometimes when I really didn’t know what to write I like when we had the chances to write about stuff like our favorite TV Show or our favorite actor/actress because it’s funny to talk about that. I think I need to improve my speaking skills and my vocabulary and I can only do that with a lot of practice so I’m going to do that. Outside the English class I could say that I frequently use my English these days because I have to read a lot of texts in English and I watch a lot of TV Shows that are in this language so I can say that English is something regular in my life. Also on the Social Medias like Instagram I see a lot of things that are in English so I really have to understand what I am reading and that also helps me to practice this language.

Changes to my Study Programme

Hello!

Like I have told you before I am studying archaeology at the University of Chile. Even when I like the career that I chose there are some things that I would like to change or put new things. Regarding to the subjects that I have to study in this career we have four main themes which are the prehistory of Chile, laboratory techniques, field techniques and archaeological theory. Also among this subjects we have complementary themes that we can choose. The length of this career is five years and we have a lot of workload because in every subject you have to be constantly reading a lot of texts or books and we have to do practical field work. One of the problems that we have in this career besides the workload are the faculty facilities because we don’t have many laboratories and our classmates from physical anthropology also need to use them.  Regarding to the teaching methods, even when we have subjects about field techniques we don’t have many practical work so that’s another problem we have on the career. Also about the technology, as archaeologist we have to use a lot of implements as GPS, microscopes, computers and programs like Google Earth but there are not enough to everybody. Even when we have a lot of things to improve, we can learn a lot of things.

My favorite TV Show

Hello again! Today I’m going to talk to you about my favorite TV Show. I have to say that it is a little hard to choose just one because I’m a person who watches a lot of series since I was a child so I have watched a lot of TV Shows in my life, anyways I finally chose a series that I found last year and has become one of my favorite ones, Supernatural.

Supernatural is a TV Show about two brothers called Sam and Dean that after their father's disappearance they follow his footsteps as “hunters” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds, including monsters, demons, ghosts and gods that roam the earth. In every episode Sam and Dean fight against a new creature or meet new people so that’s how in the season four they met my favorite character that becomes an important member of the cast, the angel Castiel. Regarding this my favorite episode is the first one of the fourth season when Dean finally met Castiel and found that he was the person that saved him from hell. I really love this TV Show because the stories are really interesting, you learn a lot about supernatural beings and you can’t avoid loving the characters, all of them have deep and dark pasts but they always keep fighting doing what they can. Also with this show you can see that life is not just black or white.

Postgraduate Studies

In this new post I would like to talk you about a postgraduate course that I’m considering to take in the future.  In first place, there is a postgraduate course at the ‘Universidad de Chile’ related to archaeology that I would like to take. A master’s degree in archaeology. This course would help me to increase my knowledge about the past and all the things that I’m learning now in my major. On the other hand, like I’ve told you before I really like the forensic and criminalistics sciences so I would like to do a postgraduate course related to those subjects. In the branch of knowledge of archaeology there is the forensic archaeology that is the specialist application of archaeological techniques to the search and recovery of evidential material from crime scenes so I like this because I believe that archaeology could be very helpful in this case. Regarding this, there is a master in Forensic Archaeology and Crime Scene Investigation at the University of Bradford in England that I would really like to take in the future. I would like to study this master’s degree as classroom teaching because in that way I could meet many new people and know new places in UK. The good thing about this course is that it lasts one year and also you can learn about the investigation at crime scenes which is a thing that I am very interest in.  

My future job

Hello again! In this new post I’m going to talk you about my future job. Since I was a child I always wanted to be a detective, I like that kind of stuffs. But at the end I decided to study archaeology because it had a big spectrum of things to do. The good thing is that now I know I still can work in the forensic area being an archeologist and that's what I would like to do. One of the reasons why I choose this major and why I like the detective work it's because I wouldn't like to work on an office, I prefer the outdoors and with the archaeology you spend a lot of time in outdoors. I really hope that whatever I work, it makes me happy with the major I choose.

Someone I would like to meet

Throughout history there has been a lot of different people, some of them we can admire it and others we can dislike or even hate.  Regarding this, in this world there are a lot of people that I would like to meet or that I would have liked to meet.

Lately, I had been very into a serie called Supernatural that is about two brothers called Dean and Sam Winchester that travel all over United States hunting all kind of supernatural creatures y beings like ghosts, witches, demons, vampires, lycanthrope, and others.  Watching this serie was where I saw for the first time the person who I want to talk you today, the person that I would like to meet. He is Misha Collins.

Misha Collins is an US actor who has been working on Supernatural since 2008 until the present. He joined the serie on the fourth season playing the character Castiel who is one of my favorite ones. I like Misha because he is a really funny person on his social media, when he is with his friends from the show or in the conventions. What I admire the most about him is that he looks like a very genuine person and even when some people think that he is a weird person, he encourages his fans to embrace their differences, to love themselves and to help and respect the people. As an actor he has won a People Choice Award, a Teen Choice Award and a Constellation Award. But also he founded an annual week-long competitive media scavenger hunt called GISHWHES to collect money for charity that has broken several Guinness World Records.  

I really hope to keep seeing him on Supernatural because he is awesome as Castiel.

Post 3: My Favorite Movie

Hello again! 

It’s very hard to choose a favorite movie because I have a lot of movies that I really like and in this moment I can’t choose only one. So, today I’m going to talk you about a movie that I recently saw and that really moved me. The movie that I choose it’s “Gifted” released in june 2017. In this movie appears Chris Evans as Frank Adler, Mckenna Grace as Mary Adler and Octavia Spencer as Roberta Taylor. The movie Gifted takes place in a little town near of Tampa and it's about a single man, Frank, raising his child prodigy niece Mary after her mom died. Mary’s mom was a prodigy mathematician so she was always studying and for that reason she never could have a normal life. Frank doesn’t want that for his niece so he is drawn into a custody battle with his mother who wants that her granddaughter continue with her mom’s work. My favorite part of the movie it’s when Frank, Mary and Roberta are the whole night in a waiting room at the hospital until a family receive the announcement that the baby was born so in that moment he teaches his niece what is the real mean of family. I really like this movie because it is very touching and I really love Chris, Mckenna and Octavia they are amazing actors.

Post 2: The Best Concert Ever

I have to say that I´m not really a concert person but the times that I had been in one I really enjoyed them. One of my favorite concerts that I had been was the Santiago Rock City on September 30^th, 2017. This concert was at Estadio Monumental and I went there with my father. That day there were supposed to perform two big bands, Aerosmith and Def Leppard and we really wanted to see the first ones but Steven Tyler (the vocalist from Aerosmith) got sick and they canceled that presentation. Anyway, my father and I decided to go and see Def Leppard even when that was a very rainy day and that was the best decision we could have made. Before that time I didn’t really know the band but when I saw them on live I love their songs, they are amazing musicians. Also there was a guest band called Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown that we enjoyed a lot. It was an especially good day for me and I spent a good time with my father. I would like to go to a rock concert again because I love that type of music.

Post 1: A country I would like to visit

Hello again!

Today I’m going to talk to you about traveling. I like to travel a lot but I have never been out of Chile so speaking about countries that I would to visit – even when I would travel anywhere – in this occasion I’m going to choose New Zealand. I really fell in love with this country since I saw that amazing landscapes in the film “The Lord of the Rings”.

Regarding the things that I know about New Zealand it is that is a small country formed by two islands, the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island (Te Waipounamu) and It is similar in size to Great Britain or Japan. New Zealand has less population than Chile (only four million people) so that is another thing that I like about this place.

In New Zealand I would like go to Hobbiton, do hiking, learn about their culture (The Maories) and go to an All Blacks game (the national team of rugby) besides many other things. I would like to live in New Zealand for a period of time, actually I have planned go to live there and study English with my cousin and her boyfriend.

Hello again! 

As we are starting a new English class with a new teacher and new classmates I'm going to introduce myself again. My name is Stephanie and I'm studying anthropology with a major in archaeology, we are in the third year of the career. 

Regarding my knowledge in English I think that my weaknesses are some concepts that I don´t understand or I don't know sometimes how to express my ideas. On the other hand I think that my strengths are the reading and writing in English and that I learn fairly quick. I hope we can practice our oral expression skills and learn a lot of new words.

The Laguna del Laja National Park

I this new post I want to talk you about one of my favorite places in Chile, the Laguna del Laja National Park.

This park is located in Antuco, a Chilean commune and town in Bío Bío Province, Bío Bío Region. In this park, it is the Laguna del Laja, the Antuco Volcano, Sierra Velluda, the tallest mountain in the region, a ski slope and a network of hiking trails. Since I was a small child, I go there with my family to visit my aunt who lived there caring for a refuge. I say lived because she has to left that place.

When we went there we did a lot of things like fish in the lake, barbecues, parties, play with the snow when we had and especially walk in the trails, one of my favorite things to do there. This park is really beautiful and there you can see spectacular mountain landscapes, animals like foxes (there was one that went to my aunt´s house looking for food) and it is very peaceful place. One of the things that I wish to do it would be come back there again.

Hi everybody! Today I’m going to talk you about a really useful career-related website. In social anthropology, archeology and physical anthropology you need to read a lot of papers and books so, as students, we need a way to get all these papers quick and easy and the most important, free. In this way SciELO is really good because you could get a lot of papers from different Chilean archaeologist and anthropologist, and of people from other countries, all of this with no-charge. According to the website, “SciELO is an electronic virtual library covering a selected collection of Chilean scientific journals. The project of regional character, it is being developed in Chile by the National Commission of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). This project envisages the development of a common methodology for the preparation, storage, dissemination and evaluation of scientific literature in electronic format”. Nowadays there is so many countries in the network, not just Chile; there also is Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, Portugal and Venezuela.

Other than as stated above, I recommend this website because is very easy find the papers of the topics that you are looking for and because there is a tool that give you the bibliographic reference in APA format.

Seashells

Today I want to show you a photograph that I really like. I wasn’t so sure if I have to choose a photo from another person or upload a photo that I took so I decided choose my photograph. Sometimes I like to take photographs with my mobile phone to different thing like animals, flowers, natural landscapes that call my attention or to my friends.

I took this photo when I went to La Serena this year in august. That weekend there were storm surges so the whole beach was covered by a lot of shells and when we went to the beach with my family we found this beautiful scene. I like this photo because I love the ocean and walk through the beach so when I saw all this seashells on the sand this reminds me the wonderful things that you can find in nature.

Technology

I don’t like when your life depends on the technology and distances you from the people but I have to say that sometimes it’s really helpful in our lives. Anyway, the technology is part of my daily life. What I use the most is my television, my mobile phone and my laptop. I should mention that I often use these things to watch series and movies. I don’t like to use social networks because I prefer to talk face to face with a person then you can express your feelings in a better way, that is my opinion.

Like I said, I really love watching series and movies so I often use my laptop for that. My laptop is small so it’s easy to carry everywhere, that’s one of the reasons why I like it. You can keep anything you want and due to the keyboard it has, it’s very comfortable when you write.

I think that if I wouldn’t have my laptop maybe my life would be a little bit boring because I couldn’t watch the things that I like. I really enjoy using my laptop

  

The Maoris

Since I saw the movie “The Lord of the Rings” and when I heard that it was filmed on New Zealand I wanted to know more about this country and its culture; this is how I learned about the Maoris.

The Maoris are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, they originally came from eastern Polynesia and arrived in New Zealand creating their own language, mythology, crafts and performing arts. In New Zealand there is about 600.000 Maoris and they form a really important part of the culture of this country. In fact, in New Zealand there is two official languages the English and the Maori and their national anthem is written in this two languages.

With respect to Maori culture there is something that I really love, their traditional dance called Haka. The Haka dance, according to the official travel website for New Zealand “is a type of ancient Māori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as when groups came together in peace. Haka are a fierce display of a tribe's pride, strength and unity.” The dance consists of various movements with arms, legs and hands accompanied by a loud chant. Nowadays, this traditional dance is using to welcome the visitors or in sport games like a way to challenge the opponent. In the case of New Zealand (in which the national sport is the rugby) the national selection and also the currently world champions (the “ALL BLACKS”) do a haka dance in all their games. It is really exciting see them dancing! Stands your hair on end!

A detective or an archaeologist?

When I was a child I dreamed to be a detective or an archaeologist despite I didn’t know exactly how it was. I always liked mystery and the detective series and books so that’s the reason why I wanted to be a detective and when I saw the movie “The Mummy” I said “hey, I want to do that it’s interesting”. I thought that was what the archaeologists do, except for reviving mummies of course. 

I was a child so I didn’t know a lot of things. Then, when I was older I discovered that I really like History so I tried to find some career related with it. I thought about studying History but I didn’t want to be a teacher so in the last moment I chose Anthropology and that’s why I'm studying this. 

I love the career and I'm happy with my decision until now. About the kind of job that I would like to have I want to be an archaeologist and perhaps I want to work in the south of Chile.  

About me

When the people ask me about me, usually I don’t know what to say so I’m going to start with the most easily, my name. My name is Stephanie but my family and my friends call me Stephie. I am from Chile, a long and thin country located in south America, and despite everything I love living here. I was born on November 14^th 1997 in the capital city Santiago so I am eighteen years old. We are five members in my family, my parents and my two little brothers.

I studied in a school only for girls for twelve years so I don’t feel very comfortable with abrupt changes however now I’m studying anthropology at the university and I really like the career despite at the beginning I wasn’t so sure; in fact, my interest was study geology.

About the things that I like to do it is watch movies and series, especially anime (animated Japanese films) and some British and American series. One of my favorites series is ‘Sherlock’ and my favorite movie is ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Also I love reading about different things like mystery and adventure. I like music but I don’t listen very often and usually are the same songs although I love to sing. Besides I like learn about other cultures and other languages. And finally as a curious thing about me, when something interesting me I search a lot of information about it.
